As part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring workplace safety, operational reliability, and emergency preparedness, Badak LNG conducted its third Major Emergency Exercise in 2026.
The exercise involved employees and business partners, as well as the entire emergency response team, including the Medical Emergency Control Center (MECC), Management Support Team (MST), Jakarta Emergency Control Center (JECC), Operation Emergency Team (OET), the Fire Rescue & Environmental Team (FRET), the Auxiliary Emergency Team (AET), the Badak LNG Hospital, and the Taman Husada Bontang Regional General Hospital.
In the drill scenario, at approximately 9:30 a.m. WITA, a hydrocarbon gas leak was detected in the Train G distillation column. The leak was discovered by a Field Operator during a routine patrol and was immediately reported to a supervisor. In response to the situation, system safety measures were implemented and the hydrocarbon gas leak was mitigated by reducing the feed gas rate to Train G and preparing to isolate the area. Production was then shifted to Train E, Train G was shut down, and the leak area was isolated.
The leak generated a vapor cloud that was carried by the wind toward the Propane Condenser, where three mechanics were performing grating repairs (hot work); consequently, the field operator instructed them to stop work and immediately evacuate the area. However, before work could be stopped, the leak worsened and the vapor cloud reached the hot-work area, causing a fire and trapping the three mechanics in the flames, where they were exposed to intense heat.
Upon receiving reports of the emergency’s progression, the relevant teams immediately escalated the emergency response status, activated the general emergency siren, and formed an emergency response team. The Fire Rescue Team was then deployed to extinguish the fire and cool down the incident area. Meanwhile, the Rescue Team carried out the rescue and evacuation of the victims.
Fire suppression operations continued until the source of the leak was successfully isolated and the fire was extinguished without further escalation. Once the situation was deemed safe, the rescue and evacuation of the victims resumed. The three simulated victims suffered burns, with one sustaining a broken bone from a fall from a height; they were evacuated to Badak LNG Hospital and subsequently referred to Taman Husada General Hospital in Bontang.
At approximately 10:35 a.m. WITA, the situation was declared safe and the all-clear siren was sounded. Through this Major Emergency Exercise, Badak LNG once again reaffirmed that safety is not merely a procedure, but a culture ingrained in every employee. The evaluation of this exercise will be used to continuously improve protection and preparedness systems in the future. Badak LNG management expressed its deep appreciation to all employees, business partners, medical teams, and security units who demonstrated solid coordination and a rapid response throughout the simulation. The success of this exercise demonstrates the collective readiness of all elements of the company to face emergencies and potential crises at any time.
