Bontang, Friday (April 17) – Badak LNG conducted a major emergency drill at the Badak LNG Plant in Bontang, East Kalimantan.

The drill began with the sound of the General Emergency Siren echoing throughout the Badak LNG site at 08:17 WITA. The exercise scenario depicted a fire breaking out beneath a loading arm at Loading Dock 1, caused by an LNG leak at the main valve flange of one of the loading arms. The leaking gas ignited, resulting in a fire that rapidly spread throughout the area.

In the simulation, two maintenance workers were exposed to the fire and sustained second-degree burns on their hands and chests. As the fire intensified, thick smoke began to enter the tower area, where a housekeeping worker was performing cleaning activities. While attempting to evacuate, the housekeeping worker was blocked by smoke and flames. The worker contacted the DCS Operator and reported thick smoke inside the tower. Shortly thereafter, the victim experienced severe respiratory distress, followed by loss of consciousness, fainting, and cardiac arrest.

The Fire Rescue Team was deployed to the location to extinguish the fire. Firefighters activated the remote fire suppression water monitor to control the spread of the fire and prepared the dry chemical system to extinguish the blaze. Approximately 45 minutes after the initial fire broke out, the fire was successfully extinguished without further escalation. Subsequently, the evacuation team, medical team, and ambulances moved quickly to carry out evacuation and rescue operations for the victims after conditions were deemed safe for evacuation. All victims were safely evacuated. The victim on top of Loading Dock #1 was rescued via vertical rescue.

At 09:33 WITA, following an inspection that confirmed no further gas leaks, an “all clear” status was announced, and plant operations could resume. This activity is part of a series of Major Emergency Exercises planned by Badak LNG for 2026.

Feri Sulistyo Nugroho, Director & Chief Operating Officer of Badak LNG, stated that the purpose of the Major Emergency Exercise is to train the capabilities, coordination, and preparedness of all employees and management in handling emergency situations.

“As a company operating in the high-risk LNG industry, we conducted this Major Emergency Exercise today to prepare for emergency conditions. We thank all parties for their involvement, ensuring the exercise proceeded safely, smoothly, and in accordance with applicable standards and procedures,” he said.

As one of the National Vital Objects producing LNG, the Badak LNG Plant must operate safely and effectively. Through the implementation of this Major Emergency Exercise simulation, it is hoped that all parties involved can understand their respective roles and responsibilities in maintaining the safety and operational security of the Badak LNG Plant.
